Description: Sculpture Art
Program Overview
The Sculpture Program for 3 - 6 at DDSTEAM is a playful, hands-on adventure into the world of
three-dimensional art! Students will squish, build, and connect a variety of fun materials, from
squishy clay and colorful pipe cleaners to cardboard creations and recycled treasures. This
class is all about turning imagination into real objects, giving children the chance to build big,
create characters, and bring their wildest ideas to life.
Learning Outcomes
By the end of the program, students will:
● Explore Basic Sculpting Techniques: Learn foundational skills like modeling with clay,
building with recycled materials (assemblage), and simple carving with soft, safe
materials.
● Develop Fine Motor & Engineering Skills: Strengthen hand muscles and coordination
by cutting, twisting, rolling, and connecting materials, all while learning how to make
their creations stand tall.
● Discover 3D Art Concepts: Begin to understand fun ideas like texture (how things feel),
balance (what makes it stand up), and form (shapes you can see from all sides).
● Practice Studio Safety: Learn how to use and care for tools and materials responsibly in
a shared creative space.
● Express Ideas in 3D: Create unique sculptures that tell a story or show an idea, and feel
proud sharing their creations with others.
Instructional Strategies
● Project-Based Learning: Every class features a fun, achievable project (like making a
recycled robot or a clay animal) that introduces a new skill.
● Demonstration & Hands-On Exploration: Instructors show simple, clear steps, then
encourage students to explore, experiment, and add their own creative touches.
● Scaffolding & Differentiation: Activities are designed to be accessible for
Kindergarteners while still offering exciting challenges for older students in 5th grade.
Tools & Technology Used
● Engaging Project Curriculum: A series of imaginative projects including cardboard
castles, pipe cleaner creatures, clay pinch pots, and recycled material monsters.
● Kid-Safe Sculpting Materials: A diverse and colorful inventory including air-dry clay,
modeling clay, cardboard, yarn, pipe cleaners, wood craft sticks, and tons of upcycled
"treasures."
● Age-Appropriate Tools: A collection of tools designed for safety and ease of use, such
as safety scissors, tape dispensers, glue sticks, and simple clay modeling tools.
● Dedicated 3D Art Workspace: A creative and messy-friendly space where students
have the room to build, create, and explore without worry.
